Slick Rick the Ruler: Ruling at the Howard Theatre

Kicking off on an evening of incredible music at the Howard Theatre this past Thursday night was Intelligenz. Representing the Windy City while following her dreams in the land of bright lights, aka “Sin City” Las Vegas, Intelligenz eliminates the stereotype of female Hip-Hop artists in the game today. With a lyrical performance that killed the stage while opening up for Slick Rick, Intelligenz undoubtedly made herself lyrically and intelligently known at the Howard Theatre.

Sporting his signature eye patch to match his bold, flashy style, Slick Rick took to the stage next — and transported the hyped up crowd to Hip Hop days of yesteryear. The legendary icon delivered the lyrics to some of his most prolific hits in the story-telling style for which he is known. The rapper ignited the audience with the infamous “Mona Lisa”, “Hey Young World”, “Children’s Story”, and “La Di Da Di” – which included a surprise appearance by special guest, Biz Markie. The diverse and appreciative crowd roared with delight as The Biz beat-boxed while Slick Rick rapped. Rick the Ruler also performed the iconic Mos Def hit, “Auditorium w/the Ruler”. It was a night that paid real homage to the roots of the Hip Hop and the unique style of one of its founding members.

When it comes to Hip Hop and the art of story-telling, Slick Rick proves he still has stories to tell. Check out the gallery below.
