“The city’s top small for a nigga like me,” proclaims $tone in the verse of his new record, “9 to 5.” The Tampa-native has a gritty, grimy flow and vocal cadence that almost puts us in the mind of a muted down Mystikal; albeit, with more annunciation. As he puts it, “my [style] shows my city has more soul than space jams — and that rappers with real lyrics still live.” It’s a different vibe than we often associate with the south.
The record is the second effort to date — the first being the super soulful, more subdued flow on “No $,” which is also available on his SoundCloud. Give both his joints a spin and if you’re feeling it, knock that share button.
