Austin Redmon – Just Like I Want You (Interview)

Jersey-based singer Austin Redmon recently released “Just Like I Want You,” the self-written lead single off of his upcoming LP. Producer Bryan Payne laid a sensual — yet bouncy — backdrop; perfect for Austin’s silky vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The result is an accessible, feel-good ballad ready for radio. Austin also has a web series, entitled “The Austin Chronicles,” where he breaks down the meaning and inspiration behind the single and gives fans a glimpse into both his life and his creative process; in essence, making his music even more relatable.

Check out “Just Like I Want You,” available now. Austin recently took some time to chat with AAHIPHOP about his music, his influences, and more. Check out our interview below; and look out for more from this promising young artist, including his full-length LP slated for release in 2016!

Tell me about your music — describe your sound.

My Music is R&B to the core, bringing that feel good R&B back with a twist. Keeping it modern, bringing different elements to the table. I would call my sound gumbo music cause I like to fuse other genres and sounds with my music.

How did you get involved in music?

When I started singing I was 10; I knew at an early age this is what I wanted to do. When I began to pursue this, I was 17. I remember going into recording sessions with my cousin fiancé at the time he was writing and working on a lot of demos for major artists. Just about every other week, he would take me with him to DJ Eddie F’s [Heavy D & the Boyz collaborator] house; he has worked with everyone from Chris Brown, and Jaheim, to Anthony Hamilton and Donell Jones. He would always bring me along with him, from there my love for music grew even more.

Who/what were some of your influences?

Artists I was influenced by growing up was Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Usher, Tank, Beyoncé, and Brandy; I’m a huge fan of hers.

What have you released?

I released my first single “Just Like I Want You,” and I’m beyond excited about to feedback I received about it; I can’t believe my record reached Japan the next day after the release I was featured on a popular blog site over there.

What are you currently working on?

What I am currently working on now is the music video for “Just Like I Want You” — I can’t wait to share it!

What have been some of your biggest achievements thus far?

I would say doing this all independently with no investor, cause when I first started almost three years ago. I didn’t know how I was going do all this with what resources because honestly, I didn’t know where to begin to make my dream a reality.

What do you want people to take away from you as an artist?

To be inspired, to not give up, and to live in your truth.

What are your ultimate goals as an artist?

My ultimate goal is to reach heights I haven’t reached before and to tour and share my gift with the world.

What is coming up for you professionally?

What’s coming up for me next is the release of my album “The Austin Chronicles” slated for a fourth quarter release, also to start touring that’s what I’m excited about.
