Tha Carter VI by Lil Wayne recently dropped, with a bonus version featuring a new verse from Nicki Minaj on the remix of “Banned From NO.” In the song, Minaj name-dropped Shannon Sharpe, among others, prompting the retired NFL star to address the situation.
Sharpe explained on Nightcap that the diss was actually a misunderstanding, clarifying, “I was talking about Nikki Haley.” This reference stemmed from a tweet he posted in February that was taken out of context. Minaj later confirmed this, tweeting, “Yeah ni*a you thought I forgot that ‘Nicki who’ sh*t you did?”
Sharpe directly addressed Minaj, expressing his apology and making it clear he did not intend any disrespect. He extended an open invitation for a conversation, whether in person or over the phone.
The song also saw Minaj taking shots at the NFL and JAY-Z, with lyrics referencing the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans. This show featured Lil Wayne, who felt snubbed for not being chosen to perform. Given JAY-Z’s close ties to the league, Minaj’s lyrics were interpreted as a jab at the iconic rapper.
Despite the initial misunderstanding, Sharpe’s response to Minaj’s mention on the track was one of clarification and openness to dialogue.
