Reel Sung Productions, founded by Tony “Mr. Wave” Wesley, has revealed that Grammy-winning rapper Nas will be featured in the upcoming three-part docuseries Beat Street: Where Are They Now? The official trailer will debut on the Reel Sung YouTube channel on Thursday, October 23, at 12 a.m. EDT.
The series will reunite 19 original cast members from the 1984 film Beat Street, including stars Rae Dawn Chong, Guy Davis, and Jon Chardiet, as well as hip hop pioneers Melle Mel, Scorpio, Kool Moe Dee, and Doug E. Fresh. Chong and Davis will act as advisors, while Chardiet will serve as a co-producer.
Nas will join other hip hop icons like Roxanne Shanté, DJ Toomp, and Ray “Yoda” Murray in reflecting on the impact of Beat Street on their careers. Executive producer Tony “Mr. Wave” Wesley, who starred in Beat Street and was part of the New York City Breakers, aims to bring authenticity to the project.
Speaking about Beat Street, Nas emphasized its importance in hip hop history, saying, “It’s a raw look at New York streets that can’t be forgotten. Because of Beat Street—and the people in it who were the real thing—hip hop turned into something bigger than everything.”
Originally produced in 1984, Beat Street was the first film to showcase all elements of hip hop. The new docuseries aims to bring together the original cast and crew to discuss the impact of the film and hip hop culture on a global scale.
