Brandy is pushing back on renewed claims about her personal life, clarifying that she never had a romantic relationship with Shyne following comments made during a recent podcast appearance.
In a statement shared after the discussion circulated online, the singer said their connection in the late 1990s has been inaccurately portrayed. “In the late ’90s, I had a platonic friendship with rapper Shyne,” she said. “In an unfortunate turn of events, that friendship is now being mischaracterized as we dated. Unequivocally, we did not.”
The clarification follows Shyne’s appearance on It Is What It Is, hosted by Cam’ron and Ma$e, where he discussed past relationships and referenced Brandy in a broader conversation about that era.
The topic gained further attention after Ray J responded publicly, prompting additional online debate. Brandy, however, made clear that she did not support how the situation was handled.
“While I love my brother Ray, I don’t condone or support the messages he shared on social media and have not asked him to defend me in any form,” she said.
Framing her response as part of a larger effort to reclaim her narrative, Brandy also pointed to an upcoming book. “People telling their version of my story is why I’m releasing my upcoming memoir, Phases,” she said. “It’s time to tell my truth and debunk many of the misnomers that people think they know about my life.”
She added that while she typically avoids addressing speculation, this instance warranted a direct response. “I rarely release statements and typically ignore stories about me in the headlines, even when they’re false,” she said. “But when I do decide to stand up for myself, I handle things on my own.”
