Will Smith recently opened up about moments of doubt regarding certain projects. During an appearance on the Full Send Podcast, the Philadelphia native revealed that he initially didn’t want to star in the movie The Pursuit of Happiness.
Smith explained that he doubted the movie’s box-office potential despite its powerful story. However, his manager, James Lassiter, convinced him to take on the role. The film ultimately earned over $300 million. This is not the first time Smith has been selective about his projects, a testament to his commitment to quality and impact.
Smith also shared an anecdote about the creation of the theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Initially, he didn’t like the version produced by Quincy Jones, who was also the show’s producer. Unsure of how to handle the situation, Smith sought advice from his close collaborator, DJ Jazzy Jeff. Jeff suggested that Smith simply tell Jones he didn’t like the song. Instead, Jeff played Smith a different beat he had created. Inspired, Smith wrote the new theme song that night in a hotel room.
The revised theme song became a hit, and Smith credits Jeff with helping him navigate the situation.
