Chuck D, a legendary figure in hip-hop known for his empowering lyrics with Public Enemy and his solo work, has consistently championed positive messages in his music. Recently, he has taken aim at rappers over 40 who continue to spread negativity in the industry.
In a recent Twitter thread, Chuck D expressed frustration with older rappers who produce dark and meaningless content. He emphasized that such artists, given their age and experience, should set a better example for younger generations. “If you’re over 40 and spitting meaningless dark energy in rap,” he wrote, “you have to really think about what matters in the hip-hop foundation that birthed your chance at it.”
Chuck D did not suggest that these rappers should stop making music altogether. Instead, he encouraged them to reflect on their role in the industry and the impact their work has on the younger generation. “I didn’t say cease and desist,” he explained. “I said think. A mind over 40 should have a better ability to KNOW self and surroundings better. The ‘green’ days are greying.”
This isn’t the first time Chuck D has voiced concerns about the state of hip-hop. In April, he criticized rap beefs, arguing that they are damaging to the genre. He noted that hip-hop originated from party and dance culture, not battle culture, and that the focus on diss tracks has degraded the quality of music.
