Shyne isn’t walking anything back. After Brandy publicly denied that the two ever dated, the rapper told TMZ he stands by everything he said. “Everything that I said is 100% true,” he said, brushing off the idea that his comments were misinterpreted.
He framed his original remarks as reflective, not messy. “I spoke from a place of admiration… and reminiscing on my experience with her,” Shyne said. “It was only positive.”
This all goes back to his recent appearance on It Is What It Is, where a conversation about that late ’90s era turned into a discussion about past relationships. Brandy’s name came up—and once that clip started moving online, it didn’t take long for her to respond.
In a statement, she shut the dating narrative down completely. “In the late ’90s, I had a platonic friendship with rapper Shyne,” she said. “In an unfortunate turn of events, that friendship is now being mischaracterized as we dated. Unequivocally, we did not.”
She also made it clear she wasn’t behind the online defense coming from her brother Ray J. “While I love my brother Ray, I don’t condone or support the messages he shared,” she said, adding that she never asked him to speak for her.
Brandy positioned the moment as part of a bigger pattern—people telling her story for her—pointing to her upcoming memoir, Phases, as a way to correct that. “It’s time to tell my truth and debunk many of the misnomers that people think they know about my life,” she said.
Shyne, though, isn’t budging. He pointed to Ma$e and the late Clark Kent as people who remember that time the same way he does. “If I was capping, Ma$e would have said, ‘Nah, I don’t remember it like that,’” he said.
He also pushed back on the idea that he dragged Brandy into the conversation himself. “I never mentioned her name. This is where this started,” he said, explaining that Clark Kent brought her up while discussing his Hulu documentary.
As for why Brandy is denying it now, Shyne said he won’t pretend to know—but he has his thoughts. “I can’t get in her mind,” he said, before adding, “She has lied to the public before to protect her image.”
He went a step further, suggesting the situation might not align with how she wants to be seen today. “Maybe the fact that she was seeing both Ma$e and I at the same time, she feels it’s not good for her image,” he said.
