Rapper Your Old Droog recently opened up about his approach to the music industry and the power of authentic relationships in hip-hop on Real Late with Peter Rosenberg.
Droog, who manages his own career, explained his preference for working without traditional management. “I feel like I started making more money without a manager and I just kept it that way,” he told Rosenberg. “I feel like I need somebody to step up to the table and do something I can’t already do for myself.”
The Brooklyn-based artist emphasized the importance of genuine connections in hip-hop. He’s collaborated with numerous respected artists, often without formal financial arrangements. “Dudes rock with you,” Droog said, describing how many artists have worked with him out of mutual respect.
Recalling his collaboration with the late MF DOOM, Droog said, “I paid Doom… it was like a homie rate almost.”
The rapper also reflected on Mac Miller’s career trajectory, noting how Miller’s ability to connect with people contributed to his success. “Mac found a way to connect with people about his rise that was different,” he observed. “He got everybody on board.”
Discussing the business side of collaborations, Droog said, “If somebody brings a good deal to the table, I’ll break [them] off.” This approach allows him to maintain control over his career while still being open to valuable partnerships.
