Lauryn Hill has responded to a lawsuit filed by former Fugees bandmate Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, calling his allegations “baseless” and “full of false claims and unwarranted attacks.”
Michel filed a federal lawsuit in the Southern District of New York, accusing Hill of fraud and breach of contract related to their canceled 2023 tour. The suit alleges Hill mismanaged the Miseducation Anniversary Tour and tried to “usurp control” of the group’s business and trademark.
In a detailed statement released to the media, Hill addressed Michel’s claims and provided her perspective on the situation:
“I’ve been silent and pushing through because I understood that Pras was under duress because of his legal battles and that this was perhaps affecting his judgment, state of mind and character,” Hill said.
She revealed that the tour was initially planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her solo album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” but was expanded to include the Fugees after learning of Michel’s legal troubles. “The tour was expanded to incorporate the Fugees because I found out that Pras was in trouble and would need money to aid his legal defense,” Hill explained.
According to Hill, Michel received a $3 million advance for the tour, which he said was needed for legal fees. She claims she covered most tour expenses herself, stating, “Pras basically just had to show up and perform.”
Hill also addressed her previously canceled tour dates, writing on Instagram on Aug. 7, “Last year, I faced an injury that necessitated the rescheduling of some of my shows” and “regrettably, some media outlets’ penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour.”
Despite the legal dispute, Hill maintained a compassionate tone towards Michel: “I am not in the business of kicking anyone, especially when they’re down, which is why I haven’t responded to date. It is absolutely disheartening to see Pras in this position, my band mate and someone I considered a friend.”
She concluded her statement by saying, “Despite his attacks, I am still compassionate and hope things work out for him.”
The lawsuit comes as Hill and Wyclef Jean prepare for a Fugees European tour, which Michel will not be joining.
