Kaseem Ryan, the critically acclaimed rapper and producer known professionally as Ka, died unexpectedly on Saturday in New York City. He was 52.
The news was announced Monday in a statement posted to the MC’s official Instagram account. No cause of death was given.
“Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka lived a life of service—to his city, to his community, and to his music,” the statement read. “As a 20-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, he put his life on the line to protect his fellow citizens.”
Ryan, who rose to the rank of FDNY captain, was a first responder during the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Ka gained recognition in the hip-hop world for his understated delivery and densely packed lyrics. He released eleven solo albums throughout his career, all self-produced and independently released.
His final album, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” was released in August 2024, just weeks before his death.
Known for his DIY approach to music, Ka often hosted intimate release events where he would personally interact with fans.
Ryan is survived by his wife, mother, and sister.
The family has requested privacy as they grieve what the statement called “this incalculable loss.”
Tributes from fellow artists poured in following the announcement, with many praising Ka’s authenticity and impact on underground hip-hop.
